NEW YORK CABARET: PROLOGUE TO THE ANALYSIS OF A PERFORMING ART FORM
The scene and aesthetics of contemporary New York song Cabaret were set in the 1980s. Its older European and American roots are studied. A topographic and typological study questions the link between places and the genre. A description of singers' working conditions and career moves is made, and the part played by mediators is assessed. The Cabaret Community combines performers and audiences; the Jewish, gay and female overrepresentations are taken into account. The social significance of contemporary Cabaret is examined. Cabaret singing involves conservation and creation. Classic pop history is outlined with contemporary interpretation in mind. Cabaret repertoire integrates younger generations' standards, and extends through composition. An analysis of song interpretation distinguishes Cabaret from jazz singing. The norms at work in criticism and performance are linked to a study of reception.
