Cabaret, from song to burlesque, is distinguished by its intimacy, directness, passion, and humor. The art form of cabaret was born in Paris in the 1880s, in small venues where performer and audience were in close proximity, interacting with song, story and poetry.
In 1997, Claudia Hommel gathered local performers to found Chicago Cabaret Professionals, to support the creation of a vibrant "cabaret scene" in Chicago for cabaret performers and their public. With twenty years of networking experience, many of Chicago's favorite cabaret artists have sought out a cultural exchange with French artists to help strengthen our "métier" in both cities. Chicago Paris Cabaret Connexion was launched with a three-day conference in Paris in September 2017.
A French delegation of 16 singers and cabaret historians came to Chicago for the 2018 Cabaret Connexion, an eight day conference of workshops, master classes, round tables and concerts led by Faith Prince and Alex Rybeck, Spider Saloff, Elisabeth Howard, Greta Pope and others.
In September 2019, the third exchange takes a team of 25 from the US to the south of France for four days (Sète and Montpellier) and to Paris for 7 days, bringing in new layers of perfomers and venues, from the Montpellier Opera House to the Chansons et Toiles Festival in the South, to the Lapin Agile and Forum Léo Ferré in Paris.Archives page for more.
